Stanozolol is a steroid derivative of dehydrotestosterone that was developed in the 60s and sold under the trade name Winstrol. It’s nickname in bodybuilding vernacular is ‘Winni’, and in that context is used almost exclusively for cutting cycles.
Winstrol has been known to be used as part of a bulking cycle in small doses, if only for its ability to inhibit the binding protein SHBG, which itself binds to testosterone, thereby lowering levels of free testosterone in the blood.
Winstrol is mainly available in oral form, though can also come as an injectable aqueous solution. People tend to take it in pill form for convenience, which presents its principal negative side effect of hepatoxicity (toxic to liver) due to its alteration to actually survive the liver pass.
Its toxicity makes it doubly unsuitable for bulking cycles because the other oral steroids (e.g. dianabol and anadrol) are also highly toxic.
What are the Beneficial effects?
Winstrol is an all out cutting supplement in that it is simultaneously anabolic and fat-reducing mostly accredited to its low androgenic rating and high anabolic power. This allows the body to retain lean muscle mass obtained during the off-season bulking cycle without too much sacrifice. When used in conjunction with more anabolics, this effect is even more amplified.
Water retention is reputedly zero, therefore the muscles have a dry look, which is why most professional bodybuilders use it as a competition-prep cycle. The liver toxicity limits the length of the cycle, giving it an effective usage period of only a few weeks leading up to an event. Aesthetic muscle definition is possibly at its best after a Winstrol cycle.
Winstrol does not aromatize (convert to estrogen), there for limiting the estrogenic effects at least to the other steroids in the stack.
- no water retention
- no aromatization to estrogen
- quality muscle definition
Note: In very low doses, Winstrol can be tolerated and used by women as it does not cause many of the unwanted masculinizing effects of other steroids. Implying this is a benefit is a relative concept considering the negative impact his could have on a woman’s liver, cholesterol levels and so on. Nonetheless, Winni has been and remains a favourite for female bodybuilders.
What are the Negative Side effects?
The liver toxicity of Winstrol is quite high, even relative to other steroids. It also interrupts cholesterol levels in that it raises bad cholesterol (LDL) and lowers the good (HDL), so while fat-burning is a positive factor of Winstrol it is negated by this behaviour.
Some research suggests this steroid weakens joints and tendon tissue, other research implies it strengthens them. Another study shows that it may strengthen them in parts and not others. Whatever action it exerts on the connective tissue, it may be a cause for injury.
There may also be adverse hypertrophic effects on the heart, whereby the solid cardiac muscle is thickened resulting in a concomitant reduction in volume of the heart’s chambers.
- Hepatoxicity (liver)
- Lowers HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol)
- Raises LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol)
- Cardiac hypertrophy
- Joint and tendon problems
As previously mentioned, Winstrol is a highly effective cutting steroid, however its negative effects limit its use to only a few weeks. This renders it only useful for preparation cutting for competitions for bodybuilders, however some athletes have tested positive for it as a performance enhancing drug, presumably for its positive effects on proteins synthesis rates.
For aesthetic and bodybuilding purposes, Winni is often stacked with Testosterone. Both Masteron and Trenbolone are regularly added to that cycle due to their versatility and strength. Masteron is rarely left out of a cutting cycle and the combination with Winstrol yields dramatic results.
Stanozolol is a prescription-only drug and therefore illegal for use as anything but a treatment a doctor has given. Its strong hepatoxicity generally precludes its use even in medical application unless the possible reward outweighs the risk.
Winni is a competition-prep steroid used by bodybuilders. There is no need to put your body through the trauma it can induce, especially if you simply want to look ‘cut’. It may prove a slightly longer task, but the reward of going through natural bulking and cutting cycles to achieve the body composition you are after is going to be so much greater, not to mention healthier.
Cardio is for cutting – remember that. Of course, there are supplements which can help you get there faster without risking your liver, heart and cholesterol levels. They are legal alternatives and there is one that fits the bill exactly; see below for details.
